Sculpture, bent rebar, welded and ground, life size, 2026
It started with a tuna can. Studying how such a thin shell is made strong led me into engineering principles, and from there into tensegrity.
The tuna is the self-initiated piece that grew out of that research. It began as a flat drawing bent in rebar, then a 3D frame. More rebar went around it and the gaps were welded shut. Weld, sand, weld, sand, until the rebar read as one solid body. The angle grinder polished it and gave it texture, then came the fins and the hook.
From a flat line to a life size body, by hand and without a mould.
Held like a catch, hanging from its steel hook.Head on: rebar welded and ground into one body.Side view in warm light, hook trailing from the mouth. The full body, tail to hook.Low light on the ground steel skin.Adjusting the fins on the stand.Hanging full length from its hook.Held up by the tail.
